Artifact 3: Math Facts
ELEMENT A: Teachers demonstrate high levels of student learning, growth and academic achievement.
ELEMENT B: Teachers demonstrate high levels of student academic growth in the skills necessary for postsecondary and workforce readiness, including democratic and civic participation. Teachers demonstrate their ability to utilize mul- tiple data sources and evidence to evaluate their practice, and make adjustments where needed to continually improve attain- ment of student academic growth.
The last piece of evidence that supports Standard VI, is weekly Math Fact Assessments. Math fact fluency is the ability to remember answers to basic math facts automatically and without hesitation. Every Monday, a math fact homework sheet is sent home with 25 problems to do, Monday through Thursday. Friday is the day they turn in
their homework that demonstrates they are practicing each night. Meaningful practice will help a student with mastery of basic math facts for future years in school. Each Friday we take a Math Fact test based on the problems they practiced at home. They have 3 minutes to complete 25 problems, and this is timed. Math fact sare an essential for entering 2nd grade. Students need to be able to recall the problems by the beginning of 2nd grade, so it is essential to reach these goals. This evidence, of math fact assessments, shows that as a teacher, Ihave demonstrated high levels of student growth and academic achievement.
This evidence supports Element A and B. Element A shows that I have demonstrated high levels of student learning in math facts mastery. Element B shows that I have demonstrated my ability to utilize data on math fact assessments each week in order to evaluate student practice and make adjustments where needed. This will aide in student improvement and growth. Intensive students are presented with an array of math manipulatives to help them understand basic math number sense. Practice each day during morning work time, has helped these students gain an understanding of numbers and addition math facts. Until they show mastery, they will have differentiated math fact instruction with myself every morning.
I have found that sending students home with math fact practice everyday plays a big role in the mastery of mathfacts. With significant practice each day, they began to recall basic math facts automatically and withouthesitation. Students love math fact practice. They love the math fact test every Friday and understand that with mastery of these facts, it makes life much easier to perform daily tasks. Telling time has been incorporated withknowing math facts, as well as counting money. Students have made that connection and have inspired one another to do their best on math fact tests. I showed them the 100-problem math fact page and they begged me for copies to do at home. Inspiring students to love what they are learning demonstrates responsibility for student academic growth.
