Artifact 3: Grade Book confidentiality and Role Play
ELEMENT D: Teachers demonstrate high ethical standards.
The last piece of evidence that supports Standard V is modeling ethical behavior by role-play and maintaining confidentiality of my students. Student scores, assessments and graded work is always kept private. This demonstrates high ethical standards respect for each student. Role-playing helps first graders understand ethicalbehavior and the importance of demonstrating this behavior as a member of society. When there is a conflict Imake sure to gather the students to address the proper behavior and offer them strategies to make betterchoices. We honor the PRIDE traits at our school on a daily basis but when I see exceptional ethical behavior Imake sure to give them a “Pride Paw.” This is a physical piece of evidence that students at CES strive to achieve.
This evidence supports Standard V, Element D. Element D depicts that teachers demonstrate high ethicalstandards. Modeling ethical behavior, including perseverance, respect, integrity, duty and excellence on a dailybasis is part of our class’ PRIDE Promise. Helping students understand the importance of how to act when at atschool can be very different from their home life. Demonstrating these ethical behaviors through role-play andinviting students to be a part of that role-play gives them accountability for how to act at school. Keeping gradesconfidential in my Grade Book shows that I adhere to standards of professional practice. Maintainingconfidentiality of student documents is required by law and all student IEP’s, personal records are in a safe place inmy desk. I do not intentionally expose student records and I present facts without bias or personal prejudice. Ialways adheres to the terms of a contract or appointment with parents and staff.
Confidentiality of my students is not only required by law, but the right thing to do. Many students do nothave an ideal home life or past life, and those pieces of information are always safe with me. I have a lockeddrawer where I keep student documents. My grade book is always on my desk, and closed so no one is able tosee. Discussing student grades is always between the student and I. Modeling ethical behavior by doing the rightthing in class, getting to my duties on time, and leading by example is the biggest role play of my life as aneducator.
