Artifact 3: Lexia Program
ELEMENT C: Teachers are able to respond to a complex, dynamic environment.
The last piece of evidence that supports Standard IV, is our after school Lexia program. The program supports students and families who need additional reading support. Some students go to the after school program and other students work on the program during appropriate class time. Some students do not have the proper equipment or parental guidance at home to continue their learning and my job is to accommodate those missing links. As a teacher, in order to fulfill this teacher quality standard, is to reflect and respond to these situations. I have met with a few students and their families to offer them a free after school tutoring program where they have assistance in getting their homework done immediately after school and not have to worry about not having the proper guidance at home. This program also offers technology and the chance to use it, for free and under supervision for those students who want to explore these fascinating technology resources.
This evidence is supported by Standard IV, Element C. Element C focuses on teachers ability to respond to complex dynamic environments. Students who are supported by the Lexia program are ELL students, students who do not have available technology or support at home or students who simply need more practice with phonics skills. Some students have parents who speak another language, so it makes things very difficult for the parents to be supportive in their student’s academic success. Some of these kids are intensive students that need more support at home, specifically in reading. As their teacher, I have implemented some ideas to improve learning at school, one of which is the Lexia Program. I am supportive of struggling students while maintaining productive relationships with students andtheir families.
The after school program has been very successful in assisting students coming from different backgrounds. It has given students the opportunity to soar in school and to play and connect with their families when they get home.
