Artifact 2: Community guest speakers, Parent Den and Crisis Team
ELEMENT C: Teachers advocate for schools and students, partnering with students, families and communities as appropriate.
The second piece of evidence that supports Standard V is partnering with families and the community. For our 1st grade Social Studies content, we educated students on community helpers. We organized community volunteers such as doctors, police officers and veterinarians to come speak to our class about what their job entails. Parent Den is another committee that meets with each grade level once a month. Grade level teachers attend and the grade level team presents any new curriculums, discuss Dibles reading scores and goals, expectations, good things and any field trip interests. Presenting to the Parent Den gives my team and I the opportunity to communicate with not only parents and families, but with the community. Parents and members of the community are invited to listen and ask questions. If grade levels are in need of fundraising money for class project or field trips, members of the Parent Den are willing to set that up and be their support system. If there are any concerns we need to bring to the table, this is a platform where we can express these thoughts.
This evidence supports Standard V, Element C. Element C depicts teachers advocate for schools and students, partnering with students, families and communities as appropriate. Community volunteers and Parent Den meetings are a platform where teachers, parents and the community partner to support student success. Parent Den allows parents to get involved with understanding our 1st grade curriculums, assessments, pacing guides for the year and any other projects in the foreseeable future. Community guest speakers bring our school and community together by showcasing local professionals speaking about the importance of their job in our small community. These are opportunities for our school and community to grow. Element C is also supported by the collaboration with governmental agencies such as the fire department, libraries and police department. During our “Community Helpers” unit, we had fireman teach fire safety to our students, a veterinarian talked about his profession and the chief of police came in to talk about his duties as an officer.
Understanding your students' needs is crucial for their success. Building relationships on a daily basis with parents, families and the community ensures achievement. I have learned that there are many parents and community agencies that want to get involved. Living in a smaller community has really opened my eyes to the incredible support for our students. Presenting at Parent Den meetings gave my team members and myself the opportunity to show all the great things going on in 1st grade. We were able to discuss our new reading curriculum and support our students need from their parents or guardians at home. Parents got a better understanding of what their child is exposed to and future reading lessons. Parent Den meetings are invaluable to ournstudents and their success at CES.
